The Books I Read In March '18

I wasn't as dedicated to reading in March. Honestly, I'm trying to think of what I was dedicated to in March and nothing is really coming to mind. I did make it to the library and picked up a few books to try out. 2 out 3 ain't bad, but this was my weakest month for reading thus far.

Untamed State: Roxane Gay is an INCREDIBLE WRITER!! I loved this book!! I devoured it within two days. My love for reading was reawakened by this book. Within the first two pages she was kidnapped and I was left in SHOCK and I had to restart the book to be prepared. My heart really aches after reading the book. A woman is always in some of kind of cage or men are attempting to contain or abuse a woman in some way that they are unaware. After her kidnapping the book tackles the privilege men have when it comes to their own safety and the ignorance they have for how their actions are perceived by women. This book is brutal and not for the faint of heart, but through the brutality the absolute strength of a woman is seen and its beautiful. I cried a lot while reading this. I cried a lot after reading it.

A Brief History of Seven Killings: Where Untamed State gave me life, A Brief History buried me deep. I couldn't get into it. I didn't finish it. I barely read five chapters. Reading something written in a Jamaican accent was too much for me. When I read something written in an accent the way I understand it is by reading it out loud in what I imagine the accent is. I am not good at a Jamaican accent and it made reading too hard. I didn't want to give up without a fight, so I sampled the book on Audible, but that was even worse. This was not the time for me to read this book. I thought it sounded interesting and maybe at another time you will see my actual review.

The Red Pyramid: Book One of a very easy thrilling read. Written by the same author of the Lightning Thief series, which I very much loved. It was just something familiar enough to bring me out of the grave that A Brief History put me in. This is an Egyptian God theme rather than the Greek theme of the Lightning Thief series. Two siblings have to save the world from chaos. HAHAH. I know it sounds so childish, but it's good, quick, and relaxing to read. Also interestingly, the kids are black and one is a boy and one is a girl. I like the way that race is integrated into a teen book because it gives young reader a way to become acquainted with lives that are different than the typical ones. As these books do it is a pretty tired trope. Kids need to save world, face some obstacles, but ultimately save the world, only to be set up for the next book where they will defeat a bigger enemy. I finished it within the week I started it and got sucked into the series regardless of its predictability. Also, I work at a treatment center and reading YA novels is a great way to connect with the teenagers I work with.

Here's to another month of reading!

xoxo
